Unit Motives: Cage

Solo choreography on music by John Cage

Vitruvian Thing, Ptolemaeon 29A, 4th fl., 54630, Thessaloniki

Die Wolke art group, for a second consecutive year, presents its Unit Motives initiative for the creation of solo contemporary dance works on musical works by great composers.

This year, the event explores the different kinetic and choreographic approaches to the interpretation of works by John Cage, as well as his compositional methods.

Cage (1912-1992) was an American composer, theorist, and writer. A pioneer in the use of indeterminacy and randomness in composition and performance, he is regarded as one of the most important representatives of post-war avant-garde. His contributions to contemporary dance were also significant, through his relationship with choreographer Merce Cunningham.

The participants will each present a short solo piece of their own choreography, produced through discussion and information exchange with Die Wolke, that explores Cage's spirit and methodology with contemporary and historical approaches to the philosophy of the composer.

The performance will take place 4 times: Sat 24 and Sun 25, 19:00 & 22:00.
Duration: 100' (incl. short break)

On both days at 21:00, there will be a happening with live music and concurrent theatre/dance performance, at UP, right upstairs from Vitruvian Thing.
Admittance to the happening will be with Unspecified Contribution

Virginia Gaidatzi will perform some vocal solos with electronics by Dani Joss, from the collection “Song Books”. Plus many more John Cage pieces will be heard!

  • Iraklis Provos + Giorgos Hatzitheodorou (Thessaloniki)
  • Drosia Triantaki (Thessaloniki)

6daEXIt, with Drosia Triantaki, will present “Variations I” by Cage, a piece that uses an indeterminate graphic score to determine its musical (and choreographic) parameters.

Virginia Gaidatzi will perform an abstract from the “Aria”, accompanied by a new realisation of “Fontana Mix” by Dani Joss.

At the same time, Iraklis Provos and Giorgos Hatzitheodorou will present an occurrence of chance-based motion events.

Die Wolke ticket

At Vitruvian Thing, we acknowledge the difficult financial circumstances of this period. Most of the time, admittance to the events we host entails an unspecified amount: you decide how much the ticket should be and, in doing so, you are supporting the artists and helping Die Wolke keep the venue running. At the entrance, we issue donation coupons to acknowledge your contribution, equivalent to receipts, as required by law.

In this instance, because of the large number of performers and the international participations, as well as the limited number of 4 performances, there is a ticket of €10 on presale (see “tickets” sidebox for information on availability).
